i was wondering if anyone can point me to a method of modifying the standard 2.3.3 image gallery box layout into something like this?

http://www.truffleshuffle.co.uk/store/mens-black-superman-vision-tshirt-p-11832.html

currently, the 2.3.3 gallery will just start putting images side by side and keep going.

but i would like to have this type of scrolling box to contain the images.

Stock osCommerce works just like the site that you linked. If you've added a template or made other changes to that page, yours may no longer work like that.

I think you could hack apart the bxgallery code to have the thumbs in a scrollable container or you could just replace the bxgallery code with your own and possibly implement something like this http://www.smoothdivscroll.com/colorbox.html for your images. Maybe use that for the thumbs and then have one large image above it like the site you linked to.

There is also http://bxslider.com/ which looks pretty nice as well.

thanks yes,

im already using bxslider for my home page banners, so i guess its possible to place the product info gallery thumbnails into a slider container.

first i need to install the KissIT thumbnailer, because the current gallery uses javascript to resize each image for some strange reason!

what do you recommend other than KissIT thumbnailer for thumbnailing images correctly?
