Plain Jane Editor in V2.3.3

I recently had V2.3.3 installed to take the place of V2.2.3 which started out as V2.1a. I had a community IT customize it but he is no longer available so I am trying to learn this. The new site is working in a subfolder and correctly displaying the content of the early version. But....The editor is a plain jane editor that has no way of filling out the info pages, adding new content pages or formatting, etc as the very editor I am typing this message into. As a matter of fact, the editor on my old site is very similar to this addition except it has boxes for meta and product tags, more pix. I have attached screen shots of the editor in V.2.3.3 and the one in V2.2.3. Does anyone know what contribution this came from?? If not, is there anything like it for V.3.3 I need something like it because I have no idea what to do with all this PHP code everyone seems to be throwing around. I am 71 and don't have enough years left to learn how to code....Any help would be appreciated.

I don't understand why you can't use that editor to add text but, in answer to your question, it is called the TinyMCE editor. The CKEditor is better in many respect so you may want to upgrade. Though if you can't add text with the current one, the new one won't be any different, unless there is a problem in the installation or I'm just not understanding the problem.

Hi Leyland,

The old site was pretty heavily customised

The easiest html editor to install is the ckeditor this takes care of the product description (only).

The images you do not need to worry about as the newer version of osc 2.3 series which you now seem to be using supports multiple images.

The boxes for meta and product tags come from an addon called header tags seo.

I see at least 6 x extra addons that are not standard.

The biggest is a wholesale contribution called SPPC so not sure if you still need but if yes better to install first.

Then...

Attributes manager

Featured products

cross sell

vouchers/coupons

page editor.

That is at first glance as I say the old site was pretty heavily customised

I have no problem putting text in the new products but the editor gives me no way of putting text in the static pages such as "Our Products" and does not provide "Linking" to other pages or graphics. The old edition allows all that and header tags, etc. That was added by Ultimate SEO which was added to the site 6 months ago. It was a great contribution because It's header and meta tags and maybe the readable URLS pushed my traffic to triple what it was before it was installed and moved some keywords to number one on Google and Bing.

Hi Leland,

The best html editor

Ultimate Seo rewrites your urls to make them readable

Header Tags Seo , which incidentally is a contribution from Jack mcs who posted above, adds extra fields to your admin/product pages and lets you add meta tags meta descriptions etc

And yes they are very useful for seo / traffic

regards

Thanks Joli,

By the way, you did have the correct Irish spelling for my first name, the first time. I did an online as to the origins of my name.. Which means "Inland Sea"

I am checking out the URLs for the contributions and ran into BKellum who was the guy who put my site together for me years ago. He worked with Jack apparently on his contribution. I dropped him a line but haven't an answer from him yet. In the meantime you gave me a lot of reading to follow up on.

Thanks

It sounds like you may have had a number of addons installed in the old shop that are not in the new one. The html editor only allows you to apply html type edits easily, like bolding. If you had an addon for adding pages, then it won't do anything with that unless that addon is re-installed and setup to use the editor.

you hit the problem on the head. Bkellum did the mods on my first site and used his STS4.6 which before the Ultimate SEO on the old site, did a great job of not only producing extra pages but formatting etc., just like this window allows. When I installed the Ultimate SEO on the old site it added all the extra features for SEO work. All was done from this editor window including inserting pix, links, fonts, etc. When TinyMCE was uploaded by my host as part of their service, I didn't see this window installed so I am going to follow up on that install and make sure they did it right. They seem very schooled on OS commerce so I just assumed the TinyMCE was something else other than the HTML editor it is supposed to be. I am usually quite busy but I have to get the other site on-line or lose my host and I like them to much for that.

You can't just upload the editor. For oscommerce, it requires code changes to be made. Same with the other addons, like Ultimate SEO. None of those come with 2.3 so when you site was upgraded, they were not carried forward. It wasn't done incorrectly, as far as I can tell, it just wasn't done. You have to start over building the 2.3 shop by installing the addons that you want. There are 2.3 versions of the popular addons but they are different from what you had so you can't just copy files.

I just downloaded the correct version of CKeditor for 2.3.3 My host included 3 scripts in the price I paid for creating a subfolder, loading the V2.3.3 and two other scripts, one which was tinyMCE which does not seem to be working. He tried to install CKeditor but when he un-zipped the file, it was empty and that was one he was just going to do for a giveaway for me. I downloaded it, and sure enough, it was empty. I searched around and found another instance and downloaded it and it's file is full. Question is, what is the process now that tinyMCE is loaded but not working? The CKeditor version downloaded claims to cover V2.3.3.

They will both work together, though not at the same time. If you install Header Tags SEO, it has an option for choosing which to use. For other parts of the shop, or if you don't install that, you have change the code to match the editor. If you have no intention of using TinyMCE, then it should be deleted since it will take up space.
