Disabling Checkout when on Holiday

Does anyone know of a contribution i can use?

When i went on holiday last time, i did display a banner at the top of the page, but apparently no-one looks! After only going away for a week I returned to find I'd been bombarded with emails from customers who wanted to know why their order had not arrived. It kind of ruins the holiday when you return to such stress!

Ideally I'd like some kind of pop-up message when people try to check out saying ' Sorry you can't checkout until 'date' as we are on holiday!' and for the checkout to be switched off

OR / AND (so i have a choice)

a pop up message (which they have to shut before proceeding), 'Your order will not be despatched until 'date' as we are on holiday', but still allow check-out.

Maybe also a pop-up box when the website is first loaded to say 'We are on hiliday, blah blah blah', whihc they have to shut before they can continue looking.

So I know they have definitely seen it.

Thank you

Running a botched up version of  osCommerce Online Merchant v2.3.4 bootstrap with the dresscode theme installed, numerous add-ons, terrible coding, terrible website, but will have to make do until I have made up for my losses and can risk shutting down for a couple of weeks while I start all over again. - I did not install my program but am endeavouring to fix it with your help.

I can think of 2 ways to deal with this:

1) Adapt the Must Accept Terms and Conditions mod so that it has the wording you want - in my 2.2 stores the customer cannot proceed to checkout unless they tick the box.

2) I have a script on my sites for a big pop-up at the bottom of the page which referrs to cookies - -again the wording could be modified to say what you want - if you like I can pm a link so you can take a look.

Now running on a fully modded, Mobile Friendly 2.3.4 Store with the Excellent MTS installed - See my profile for the mods installed ..... So much thanks for all the help given along the way by forum members.

Kelly, there are at least several add ons that deal with when the shop owner is on holiday. I use two different ones on separate shops, I was testing them out, that's why two.

I am not a professional webmaster or PHP coder by background or training but I will try to help as best I can.

I remember what it was like when I first started with osC. It can be overwhelming.

However, I strongly recommend considering hiring a professional for extensive site modifications, site cleaning, etc.

Hi,

thank you. I did see the second add-on before, but it did look like something that the customer would have to read! Despite having a huge picture banner at the top of my page when i was unable to post due to the heavy snowfall a couple of years ago, i still got people asking about orders!

I made the mistake of putting my telephone number on the website! My phone never stops ringing with people wanting to know when their order will be sent and I have a permanently bitten lip from trying to stop my self from screaming - "it'll be sent if I ever get of this darn phone!!!"

Hence - why i really need a proper holiday!

The first one there by @@olsonsp4c operates by not letting the customer check out. It allows customers and search engines to browse the site/products but stops the checkout process with appropriate notifications and such.

Hi, I thought i'd have a crack at this one: http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/6332

But i notice there are a few updates and i have to run a SQL thingy! My website is old and I haven't a clue how to update it to a newer program (and I daren't!), am i likely to run into any pitfalls here or was it pretty straight forward? thank you

It's been a while since I installed that; so my memories a bit fuzzy on particulars of the install process. I have that running on two 2.2rc2a shops and then on one 2.3 level shop. When I've needed to activate it, it worked fine as described.

If your shop is 2.2rc2a the install instructions should be right on. If you have an older version of that may be an issue but I'm not sure.

So if you give it a go..do the complete backup of shop and database first and then have at it. Good luck
