Background header and footer to cover 100% width

Hello

 

I am wanting a image to expand across the full width of the browser that is fixed height.

The image starts purple and then goes to black so i can assume i can fix the image to the left with no repeat and have a background colour of black which will make my image look like a full width image.

 

I am wanting this to be background of header and background of footer also.

 

I am using 2.3.3

 

Any ideas on best practice to do this.

Do the footer change OUTSIDE the div in /includes/template_bottom.php

 

Typical example of such is in my grey theme.
