Show image on index.php only

I want an image to show up on the first page you hit (index.php), but then NOT on any of the other pages. This was very simple to do with some php editing in older versions of oscommerce...

 

1) Where can I edit just the landing index page to add my image?

2) how do I make it NOT appear on all the pages but the landing page?

 

and on a side note:

is it at all possible to make the catagory/product titles point to a static php page or should I just give up on that quest??
