chelle40 Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Hi, I am using a template from Template Monster (templage 40138). The product information states: OsCommerce Engine: 2.3.1 OsCommerce Compatibility: 2.3.1 Does that mean I cannot upgrade my oscommerce version? Thank you, Shelli
multimixer Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Only TM can tell you what they mean with anything they post on their website Sure thing is, that you can upgrade your store, you'll need to compare each file carefully before doing any changes My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel
chelle40 Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 Thank you Multimixer Ok - I asked template monster and they said that means that the template I purchased is not compatible with oscommerce v2.3.3 However, she said their development department could upgrade it for an additional $69 but I'd have to start editing the look of my shop from the beginning. Before, I asked them about how to install the discount code add on and I was also told it would be an additional fee and I ended up figuring it out myself (well, with the help from very good instructions that came with the add on download). So, I'm thinking upgrading to v2.3.3 will work and they just don't want to help unless I pay more. The only thing is ... it sounds like I would need a pretty good understanding of all the code involved to get it to work, and I do not. I was able to muddle through changing the look of my shop from the template but I don't understand the php and/or javascript at all. Has anyone ever done what I am wanting to do ... and if so ... is it fairly straight-forward if the instructions are followed correctly? Or would I need a greater understanding of the code?
Guest Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 @@chelle40 Has anyone ever done what I am wanting to do Yes, it's been done a countless number of times. is it fairly straight-forward if the instructions are followed correctly Yes, if you can follow instructions, you should be able to do it yourself. Or would I need a greater understanding of the code? A basic understanding of PHP is required to use osCommerce. With a commercial template, you may encounter code differences that vary from the update instructions so understanding what the code means, is a definite advantage. Chris
♥Monika in Germany Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 as someone who ears their living from coding and doing upgrades, I believe that the 69USD they offered you (calculating time needed) is ok, most probably even "cheap". It's certainly not ok that they would only work on an unmodified version of your store which your site no longer is, obviously. So basically you have three options, which should all start with taking a full backup of all your files: a) try it yourself! you will probably manage just fine B) pay someone who wirks on modified files c) try yourself and if does not work pay someone ... ;-) :-) Monika addicted to writing code ... can't get enough of databases either, LOL! my toolbox: Textpad - Compare and Merge - phpMyAdmin - WS_FTP - Photoshop - How to search the forum Interactive Media Award July 2007 ~ category E-Commerce my advice on the forum is for free, PMs where you send me work are considered consultation which I charge for ...
