File permissions

I have just re-installed osCommerce and when I entered the Admin Area I had the Message that configure.php needed it permissions changed as it was writable. I endeavoured to change the permission to stop it being writable and it keeps reverting back to 644. I changed it to read only, 444, and back it went to 644. I can change it the other way and make it fully read and writable but it wont allow me to make it Readable only. Does anyone have any ideas how I can chage it to remove the warning.

You are trying to change it via your FTP client, your hosting provider has disabled that option so you must change file permissions from your hosting account control panel.
