How to sort options order, Linda's sorter not working for me

Anybody know how to get the options to be sorted in a specific order. If colors are the option, we want people to be certain and make a choice, so we have added "Please select" as an option and want this to be the default. I have tried naming it "1. Please Select", which does not make it come up as default.

 

I deleted all options and started from scratch, "Please Select" is number one in the options list and in my database, didn't do it.

 

I have searched the forums and have tried Linda's Sorter. No luck yet.

 

Linda if you see this, I am not able to get your contribution working for me.

 

Version is: tep_snapshot-20030302

 

Have done a number of other mods that are great, but this one stumps me.

Did you ever get this figured out? If so can I ask how you did it? I would prefer making the changes manually as well (without using any contrib I've seen so far).
