BlueMe Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Hi, I'm new at osCommerce and I will like to ask you guys some simple things : A friend of mine asked me to translate for him a template that he wants to buy for osCommerce, not having any knowledge about osCommerce I thought I ask some basic questions before I can answer him if I'll take the job or not. He wants me to translate the shop (he said the theme, but I suppose it's not just the theme) and host it. Few things before I ask the questions: - For the refference, the template is this : http://www.templatemonster.com/demo/28470.html - I've did a quick local install to familiriaze myself with the platform and found it very straight forward. - My background is HTML, wordpress (easy) and started to work with Joomla recently (not too technical but I can manage My questions are : - How much time will it take me to translate it (I will use a string search & replace utility and my own language dictionary) apx. ? (I usually work fast & productive) - How exactly does the installation of the theme works (I saw a video on youtube wich shows that you just override the contents of the maine directory :o with your theme files) ? - If he buys the theme + install as offered in the link from TM, does this means that I only need to translate the theme itself & the platform ? Your reply is valued as I need to give a quick answer (today) so any input is welcomed. Feel free to add your own thoughts and ideeas on this matter. Thank you for courtesy, Dragos
multimixer Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 @@BlueMe The quick answer: If you have no idea about osCommerce, you should not take any job related to osCommerce From there on, spend some time to understand at least the basics of osCommerce. You'll see then that you can have a store a multiple languages without any code edits, that there are language packs available, that the "template" you want to use is in real a complete osCommerce installation, that the particular template is an outdated osCommerce version, so your store will not be 2.3.3 and much more Spending a bit more time on that, you'll find out that there is no real support for purchased templates of this type, that you'll depend on TM to support you, that any addon installation will be much harder etc etc My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel
BlueMe Posted October 19, 2012 Author Posted October 19, 2012 Ok, I see, thank you. If you have no idea about osCommerce, you should not take any job related to osCommerce True, but my job will be the translating only. Even if I had to install it on a server, I didn't find the installation of osCommerce difficult. Is there any major difference between offline & online install ? If we buy the theme, I'm guessing that after I'm finished translating it, the install will go easy. (and I knew about language packs but didn't had the time to thoroughly search for an up-to-date one.) From there on, spend some time to understand at least the basics of osCommerce If I had the time, I wouldn't posted this :) I'm a self taught guy so your store will not be 2.3.3 Thanks for pointing this. Spending a bit more time on that, you'll find out that there is no real support for purchased templates of this type, that you'll depend on TM to support you, that any addon installation will be much harder etc etcI wouldn't even exect support, my friend wants to setup a little store and picked this theme, so he just trows some products in there (no plugins, scripts, etc, just default) and that's kind of it.
multimixer Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Ok, so, just go ahead then, most languages are available as addons, the whole thing would not take longer than 5 minutes unless you need swahili or something My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel
