Dev Site: Connect to same DB as live site or what is your preference?

hi all,

I seem to be chiming in quite a bit today; I was wondering what some people's likes and dislikes are (I can think of some of my own) about having a development/test site off of their main live site that connects to the same database as the live site?

I guess the good thing would be that they are always in synch - you would only need to worry about code changes; (migrate code changes from test to prod)....

but, I can see a problem when I go to test, since I am hooked to the production database, I would be testing on a "live" database.

More experienced developers who have their dev/test site hosted off of their main production site -

Do you prefer to have a seperate test database then configure prod to be the same?

OR

Do you prefer to use the same database for testing and prod?

Thanks for comments

Charlene

I use a separate database for development and use the live production database for integration test, the final testing before I move the code to the live site.

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON

I do not use the responsive bootstrap version since i coded my responsive version earlier, but i have bought every 28d of code package to support burts effort and keep this forum alive (albeit more like on life support).

So if you are still here ? What are you waiting for ?!

Find the most frequent unique errors to fix:

grep "PHP" php_error_log.txt | sed "s/^.* PHP/PHP/g" |grep "line" |sort | uniq -c | sort -r > counterrors.txt
