Thumbs? On the Fly vs oscThumb

Recommended Posts

I have oscThumb installed in my shops. http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,5491

It's running fine, but it throws a bunch of errors when my sites are run using the W3C markup validation service. Maybe not a big deal, or maybe it is. I don't know.

I am considering switching to On the Fly thumbs: http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/2226

I am interested in the pros and cons when compared to one another, both for 2.2 and 2.3.1 shops.

Thanks

I am not a professional webmaster or PHP coder by background or training but I will try to help as best I can.

I remember what it was like when I first started with osC. It can be overwhelming.

However, I strongly recommend considering hiring a professional for extensive site modifications, site cleaning, etc.

There are several good pros here on osCommerce. Look around, you'll figure out who they are.

Have you read the OTF thread on the current issues?

Have you looked at the performance hit oscThumb makes on your server OTF thumbs will do the same, or is your server capacity high enough and visitor count low enough not to matter?

As I mentioned in the OTF thread I did a rewrite as couldn't find anything that would work properly and didn't use excessive resources, I'm still considering if its worth creating a new add-on around that.

Wasn't aware there were issues, but will look at that thread.

My host shut down one of my sites a while back wanting to know what oscThumb was. After I explained, they were OK with it. Since then, I am with same host, but on VPS. My sites don't draw huge traffic though, just enough customers to pay the bills and keep me interested.

For me, bottom line is I was trying to get a thumb generator for my osc shops that picked up page speed loading. It wasn't until just a week or so a go I ran the validator that I began to reconsider oscThumb. I'm good to leave well enough alone, but I want to keep my options open as well for something better.

Thanks

Yes, especially with Google's campaign for fast sites (which I suspect was partly due to the excessive use of javascript many sites were guilty of) you need a fast site, so its daft when the thumbnailer you use to cut loading times increases them as well with too much processor use.

I ran the validator

Yes, nothing you add should make you fail validation, I think its a pity there isn't some sort of a scoring system for add-ons, it would make it easier to avoid the bad ones.
