I made the change, but it doesn't seem to keep the session any longer. I increased it to 3600, is there something else I need to change?

check your permissions. I forgot to check mine and they are at 644, so the first time my changes didn't save. But after I remembered to change to 755, then make the changes to the length of time you want, that should work. Don't forget to change your permissions back to 644 when done.
