Mixed Art Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Not sure where to post this question and I apologize in advance if it has been addressed already, but I cannot find information on my question anywhere here on the forums. I am relatively new to OS and have hired developers as needed to push projects ahead when I get in over my head. I have a functioning, no issues 2.3.1 store, up and running with 700+ products. These products were added from an older version of OS that did not have any product attributes attached when we did an upgrade to the latest OS version and our developer did a product dump to the new store. I have now created a Products Attributes Option that has 4 Option Values that have to be added to every product on the site. Is there any way to give the entire list of 700+ products these 4 Option Values at one time? Is the only way to add the attributes one by one to each item in the store via admin? Or is there a phpMyAdmin tweak that can be done to the entire catalog db? I'm hoping there is an easy fix but fear I have a lot of work on my hands! Any help or insight is appreciated.
♥geoffreywalton Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Try testing easy populate for 2.3.1 which is an add_on There were versions for 2.2 that inserted attributes. Mixed Art Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 Yes thanks--I looked at the version of EasyPopulate 2.76i for v2.3.1 that was posted 7/2011 but it does not handle product attributes well. In the text notes the author states-- What does EP *NOT* do well? So far, EP does not handle attributes well. When viewing product export, it may be difficult to understand how it works. As such, I do not recommend that anyone use EP for managing attributes. EP does not handle "download" attributes. The default behavior of EP is to Add & Update. If you download a product, change its category, then upload, EP will add the product to the new category. EP will not remove it from the previous category. EP does not move products from one category to another either. The code is improved but still needs work. I am trying to understand the issues with how it handles attributes and was hoping for an easier more bullet proof solution. I have not found an update to that add on since it was posted. Easy Populate & Products Attributes posted 12/2011 handles attributes but is for version 2.2 only. So I guess a better question to the community might be: are any developers thinking of working on making Easy Populate handle attributes for OS version 2.3.1 easier? I am not a programmer and have no idea how to tackle a problem like that. Having the ability to add attributes to a category or entire category from Admin and the Products Attribute page pre-built in to OS would be ideal. Has that ever been considered for versions going forward?
♥geoffreywalton Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 He only says When viewing product export, it may be difficult to understand how it works. I have used it in the past and can only say try it and see if itworks for your situaion. It did for mine. Download a file and see what it looks like and try uploading a few products with attributes. Make sure they all exist with the values you want to use. Mixed Art Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 Thank you Geoffrey for encouraging me to try the add on. Made me get over my fear of trying something new and it worked like a charm -- all products now have the attributes I want. The really fun part has been learning about data base management a little bit more then what I understood and I was also able to make global changes to some of the other item characteristics. That has been a real bonus. So hats off to you and the forums. Great knowing I have a responsive community to go to for the newbie help I need! All the best--Peter
