If you'd done a search first, you would have found this discussed many times.

Basically, your currency symbol was defined in UTF-8 (two bytes), while your page is displaying in Latin-1 (ISO-8859-1) and shows as two separate characters. How did you get the "pound" sign into the currency field? Did you cut and paste it in? If you did, you were going from a UTF-8 display to a store which is configured Latin-1. The best and easiest way to fix it is to go back into the currency edit page and enter the Pound Sterling mark as & pound; (close up the space between the & and the pound; text).
