No longer able to edit define languages

Hi,

 

I recently discovered a problem editing files in the define languages folder.

I access this through the tools in admin panel /define languages and have been using this facility for years.

These text in these files appear in the public area eg greeting at top of home page,shipping & returns,privacy notice etc

 

For example if I try to edit text in index.php I get the following error message when I try to save:

I suspect a permissions problem at the server but cant identify the exact location of the files.

Any help would be appreciated.
