Optimization on osCommerce

Hi,

Some days ago i started an optimization process on my oscommerce, added ultimate SEO, auto meta tags, changed my title, submited sitemaps, but no results, its like google dont accept my description for my main page, it shows words of my footer in the description when i search for my website name, and shows the description of my main page on the sub pages, like contact, news, instead of showing this pages description. So my question is: how can i optimize my osCommerce if i cant add a lot of text to this? how to make a non polluted page on google?

Obs: I asked about my keywords on google community too, and one guy told me keywords don`t have this weight anymore.

Really thanks to any answer,

Any changes you make are only shown in the listings when the search engines get around to searching your site and making the updates. That may be today or in May, or some other time. First, you should look at the dates of the last update for your listings. If they are before you made the change, then you just have to wait. If they are after, then you've done something wrong with the changes. The search engines, especially google, will create their own descriptions if their bots can't determine what the page is about so maybe you added text that wasn't relevant to the page, or something like that.

Also, you need to be sure the meta tag contribution is doing its job. Some of them try to build the titles and tags from the page, which is a mistake, and the result can be far from what you should have.

Jack,

Ive added the principal pages metas manually (like index, contact, about, reviews) to avoid mistakes, only my products and categories pages are generating it automatically (with product descriptions and products names). In administration panel i can see google stay online like all the day on my website. Where i can see the date of the last updates?

Thx,

Marco, Jack is an expert in SEO. I'd just add to what he said, basic things ... like, of course you want to configure your website so it's optimized for all major search engines. Each major search engine has their own way of sending a bot to query your website. For instance, Google, you go to http://www.google.com/addurl/ ... Yahoo/Bing you'd go to http://siteexplorer....o.com/index.php ... Do this properly, and your site will be indexed by the various search engine bots.

The Ultimate SEO and Header Tags/Meta Tags are both good. Focus your meta info on info-rich key phrases. Then, you want SEO-friendly contributions:

http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1501

This will list all products on a page called allprods.php, so it's good for SEs.

http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/7832

Featured Products, so you can control what's on your home page, how many products, and that can take the place of lack of text

http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/6459

A good sitemap will reference your product pages from one page, and SE bots like that

Sitemap feed

Google Feeder, sends a data feed to Google Base

Just follow the installation instructions. They're all pretty simple. Hope this helps.

Thanks jpweber, ill try these things, but now im having a problem with an sitemap compatible with ULTIMATE SEO URL made by jack, the error returning me when i access googlesitemap/index.php:

1054 - Unknown column 'c.categories_status' in 'where clause'

SELECT p.products_id as pID, p.products_date_added as date_added, p.products_last_modified as last_mod, p.products_ordered

FROM products p, categories c, products_to_categories p2c where c.categories_status='1' and p.products_id = p2c.products_id and p2c.categories_id = c.categories_id and p.products_status='1'

ORDER BY products_ordered DESC

[TEP STOP]

I really dont know what to do about this, any idea?

Did you run the database queries that came with the contribution? It appears you're lacking a database field, so that's my guess without knowing more.

Make sure your permissions are set to what your webhost requires. Just to make sure, set the permissions to 777 and go from there.

SEO 5 is not compatible with Google XML Sitemap. If you want to use Google XML Sitemap, you need to use Ultimate SEO V2.2d (recommended): http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/2823

Go to google and type in site:domain name, substituting your domain name, of course. Pick one of the resulting links and click on the >> to the right. Then click cached and it will show the last saved date. The actual page will be equal to that or newer. If there isn't a cached page, then that page has only been scanned once.
