Products New - latest items first?

Hi, I am continually adding items to my store and on the front page I have the products new box showing in the center of the store. However it does not matter how many items I add the same items are showing as products new. I have looked in the whats new section and my products are appearing there but not in the order I was expecting. Infact I can not work out what order they are appearing.

Is there a way to make the latest added products appeear first?

 

Surely there must be a way to do it by date or something?

 

I have a modified store so the featured products contribution will not fit exactly as some of the code I need to change I do not have so that one is no good to me at this point.

 

Any advice much appreciated.
