Adding SSL cert to site

I'm wanting to add an SSL cert to my oscommerce site. I saw where godaddy has a standard cert on sale for $12.99. Is this all I need and then send it to my hosting provider to add to my site? I'm a little new to the whole SSL thing so any help would be greatly appreciated. Their support isn't to helpful.

Thanks

Chris,

You will need to edit the two configure.php files as well to enable the SSL in osCommerce.

You have to get a file (csr) from your host before you can get the actual cert file. You should check with your host first since most will allow you to do that but some won't.

If you get the $12.95 ssl from Godaddy, you will be able to process credit cards, etc with 128 ssl encryption. (Without it, you will be unable to open a https page - which would distress website users). However that is kinda of a 'shared' ssl certificate linked to Godaddy. You will be unable to put up a nice official ssl site seal that when a website visitor clicks on it, it displays a window with your website address on it saying your website is registered with Verisign or RapidSSL or whoever.

Those cost at least $50 for RapidSSL or several hundred for Verisign.

Ok I see the difference. Click the Godaddy site seal and does display the site name, but it also displays www.godaddy.com as the originating site. I suppose it comes down to name recognition, and it's worth the extra bucks if your customers decide having Verisign on the seal provides a little more confidence than seeing Godaddy.

The name may, or may not, mean something to someone that is familiar with such things but I truly doubt that the average customer cares, or even knows, about who the cert was issued by, Most only know to check for https and/or the lock icon. If it means more to the shop owner to have a different name for the cert supplier and they are willing to pay the extra amount, then there isn't anything wrong with that but it will make little, if any, difference to the customers, in my opinion, of course.
