It now looks like I will not be able to salvage the site and will have to start from scratch. Can anyone advise if I should install 2.3.1 or make the leap to version 3 while I now have the opportunity to. Thanks Sean

If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you.
