Transfering to a new Host

I need help transferring to a new host, without any backup. I have a zipped version of my site from 2009 from the person who originally did my site. She's willing to help with the transfer but waiting on a quote from her.. probably more than I can afford at the moment. (nothing's really changed other than scent list)

I can manually upload individual file from my hard drive but I was hoping there was an easier, faster way?

I know I could figure this out if I just had some help lol. I helped her with the site before which helped cut down on costs (once it was installed) the installation of it is what has me baffled. I'm not sure If I need to do a new install through my cpannel or if manually uploading the files I already have and that were already done will work..

I read some of the other topics on transferring to a new host, but none seem to address my issue?

Kathy,

1) Create a new database on the new hosting account and import the backup database to it. Be sure to copy the new database name, username and password for use later.

2) Use your FTP client to upload all of the files onto the new server following the directory structure.

3) Edit the TWO configure.php files to reflect the new server path and database information.

Hi Chris, Maybe I wasn't clear, there is no backup database anywhere. I wasn't able to do it before the website shut me down for non payment(only went five months was able to log in on the 2nd, but held off till this weeks pay check for some more wiggle room but they had already terminated my account without telling me ahead of time so I wasn't able to log in and do anykind of backups only thing i'm working from is from the zipped file my web designer was able to give me from 2009 when we did the intial install which of course doesn't have any of the databases just the install of the website itself),and they (the orginal host)do not save any earlier backups already tried that before going to a new host.

Apparently I need to learn to read rofl. Chris I'll try what you suggested when I get home from work. where would I find the configure.php files? And where would I find the info to redirect them?

Like I said this is all new to me...

Kathy,

The configure.php files are found in:

/includes/configure.php

/admin/includes/configure.php

The new path you will need to edit can be found on your new hosting account control panel.

Chris.. I just re-read your post.. problem is.. there is no database.. just the zipped up website from the initial template that I purchased and she customized a bit for me. Everything was lost when they terminated me for non-payment (which I totally get I just wish I would have gotten an email so I could have had her back up my site from her end)

Kathy,

In the .zip under the /admin/backups/ directory was there no back done ????

If there wasn't, you will have to use a standard database from the oscommerce.zip file and reconstruct the tables for any/all contributions that are installed. It can be done, it will be time consuming, but it can be done.

No Kathy, unfortunately that's not it.

It looks like you will be creating a database for your site. Do you know what version you have ? You will need to know so you can start with a basic structure.

It says osCommerce 2.2 Milestone 2 on Oscommerce documentation which was provided when I got my template back in 2009.

Kathy,

If in fact you have a MS2.2 site, I would suggest you forget about resurrecting it.

Create a new site using v2.3.1.

MS2.2 was insecure and the core structure was not very strong.

Hmmm I never had any problems with it when it was up and running. In fact it has been up and running since 2009. I had a strict html site that was done by a web designer but figured out a lot of html on my own so was able to update it often so I'm not new to updating websites, just new to Oscommerce, I useto use Front Page Sigh.. It was the only template I really liked that went well with my logo it says OsCommerce 2.2 RC2a is that better?

This is the template (not necessarily where I brought it)

http://www.templatemonster.com/oscommerce-templates/23501.html the background on the top was changed to a file I found on Istock and this is my logo.

Kathy,

If your site was RC2a, I would say it could be resurrected. However as you said it was MS2.2, I wouldn't recommend it. Even RC2a requires security patches and additional modifications to make it secure, but at lease RC2a is only 1 version behind. MS2.2 is 4 versions behind.

To clarify, osCommerce is written in PHP.......NOT HTML. Making code edits is more complicated for inexperienced users but not impossible if you are willing to learn.

As a quality note, Template Monster is NOT known to supply the best quality templates and often than not, purchasers end up having a really hard time modifying the template to suit their needs because the programmer has removed or altered required core code.

If you are thinking of purchasing a new template, ensure it is v2.3.1, you might as well buy something that is up to date.

Chris, I said the documentation for installing the Oscommerce that was provided was for version 2.2 MS2.2, however when I looked up the template # on line several sites refereed to it as version Rca. I'm not sure exactly where I got it.. I was just referencing the website template I got.

I really can't afford a new template right now.

Kathy,

The only way to confirm which version you have is to check the /includes/applicaton_top.php file around like 36 for 'PROJECT VERSION'

Hi Kathy,

That's good news, you can download RC2a from GITHUB and use the database as the frame work to your database.

*bangs head against table*

I've been *trying* to upload my site all week and 90% of my files will not show in cpanel, tech support at my hosting site is useless even after showing them the screen prints. they say they can see the files fine yet when I show them screen prints they tell me how to transfer files via ftp. I *KNOW* how to do this.. I even switched ftp clients and watched all my files being transferred yet in cpanel 90% of them do not show up. See screen print of an example. I'm pretty sure my index structure is messed up too.

Kathy,

I am fairly certain it is because the directory you are installing into is /public_html/beli elements2/www/www/

In most cases, you installation would go into the /public_html/ directory and a sub-directory like /public_html/catalog/ if you have a static site that links to the your osCommerce installation.

Thanks Chris.. Like I said I'm pretty sure my index is messed up but even during the initial transfer (when I didn't have the www/www sub directory there) 90% of my files didn't transfer over. Only way I would be able to get them to show is if I manually uploaded them through cpanel file manager. Or even after deleting all the files and starting from scratch in the public_html directory it did the same thing.I should add that I tried three different ftp clients. The first two didn't show everything even after doing some tricks I read about so deleted the directories, then used smart ftp, and I watched it transfer everything in the folders over and I still got that.
