Is it possible to add a "New!" label to products/categories?

Ok, I'm aware that there is a section for new products. What I'm wondering is if a "New!" label can be automatically added to new products (without having to manually add it to every new product), or to new categories.

 

For example:

 

Say you've had a shop for a while, same old categories, same old products. But now you're going to be adding some new categories and products, so it would look something like this:

 

Category 1

Category 2

Category 3 (New!)

 

Product A

Product B

Product C

Product D (New!)

Product E (New!)

 

 

Is there any way to get that (New!) label to automatically appear next to new products or categories?

I'm sure it can be tweaked to use text instead of an image or whatever your needs are.
