Bad choice?

Hi, I am new here and I want to know if there are any "real-world" Real Estate For Sale websites implemented using oscommerce - or is oscommerce just a bad choice for this type of site? Thanks in advance!

Selling real estate should be the same as selling any other product so oscommerce will work fine. I don't see how you can sell real estate online but I'm guesing it is possible. There may be a need for special forms, like picking the location of the real estate, but that is special coding that would be needed for any site you setup.

Jill,

You can use osCommerce as an information site to offer the details of each site, however I don't think you are going to get ANY online payment processors to accept a credit card payment or paypal payment of 150,000 for a property you are offering online.

So, yes you can use osCommerce to facilitate the sale, but the final details and payment would most likely have to be finalized in person.

Real Estate is different from other products, in that it tends to be "one off" listings (quantity 1, and when it's gone, who knows how long until it's back on the market). If you're listing somewhat similar "stock", such as acreage or apartments in a given complex, osC (or any other ecommerce) might be usable as a catalog. As pointed out before, you're certainly not going to consummate the sale online.

I don't think any store-oriented system, including osC, is going to have a sufficiently good and flexible search (by many criteria) mechanism for finding a "product" in Real Estate. Plus, you would want many images and even movie clips of the property, as well as information on the complex or surrounding area. I would suggest looking for specialized e-Real Estate software. Maybe there's some suitable free or inexpensive stuff out there, but you'll probably end up paying a pretty penny for it.
