What version should I download?

Hi,

I installed ver 2.3. But I just realized that a lot of add-ons such as cross sell, points/rewards program, etc does not exist for ver 2.3. I am thinking to install ver 2.2 because it has the most add-ons. Is it a good idea? What would be your advise? Is 2.3 the transient version between ver 2.2 and 3.0? Will there be more contributions on it? How about ver 3.0? Is 3.0 running smoothly now?

Thanks.

Roger,

Although not all of the contributions have not been updated to function with v2.3.1 it is because many of them are no longer supported by the original contributor and/or there isn't much call for them to be updated, I would still suggest using v2.3.1 as it has a stronger core code and security enhancements. If you find you need a contribution that is not v2.3.1 compatible, then you can seek help from the forum to make it compatible.

Further, v3.x is NOT ready for production. The current v3.0.1 is the framework so developers can build on it. It is not functional.

As a side note, you may see a shift in the way contributions are created and distributed in the near future as many developers are no longer uploading contributions for FREE download. Instead they are making them available for sale on private websites. This practice has been gaining popularity since v2.3.1 was released and will certainly be the standard as v3.x is developed and made ready for production.

To make things more difficult for you, :) I don't suggest installing 2.3. There are some improvements in it but not worth the extra effort to get a shop up and running, in my opinion. Eventually, V3 will be out and you will most likely want to upgrade to it. By all accounts, it will not be comaptible with anything that has gone before so you will need to go through another round of getting contributions installed, once they are available. I don't see the appeal of having to do that twice. If 2.3 had been released as an upgrade, then that would be a whole differnt matter, but the way it was coded was a mistake, in my mind, and should be avoided for the reasons I mention.

As for converting the contributions, I'm not aware of the "going private" trend that Chris mentions though I'm sure he wouldn't have said that if it weren't true. But another reason they are not being converted is because many are not supported by one person so no one is stepping forward to make the conversions. And still another reason, and the one I use, is that it just takes too long, if done correctly. Out of my 60+ contributions, I've converted around five. I just don't have the time to do that for all of them. It is planned but I doubt I will complete them all before V3 is released. Whichever reason it is though, the result is the same and the only loser from it are the 2.3 users.

Hi, Chris and Jack.

Thank you for your advise. ver 2.3 has very limited add-ons (most features/modules I am looking for does not exist). Ver 3.x is still in testing phase and almost no add-ons. How about using ver 2.2? I realized it has all add-ons I needed. What is the worst scenario if I use ver 2.2? The most concern I have on ver 2.2 is that I have to switch to new version very soon and give up all my efforts on it (because I am going to hire designer to custom design the web pages).

Thank you again.

2.31 is the best and most secure choice, but if you decide to go for 2.2 make sure to add all the security add-ons or you will be hacked.

As a side note its fairly easy to change a 2.2 add-on to work in a 2.31 shop.

Roger,

As Nick stated, the most important thing with RC2a is to secure it. Other than that, it is a good release.

Thank you, Nick and Chris.

Would you let me know what security add-ons that I need to download for ver 2.2? Where should I go to download the final full package of ver 2.2(including all patches)?

Best regards,
