Recommended Posts

Hi I am working with OsCommerce for the first time. I have installed basics all ok but there are many links that do not work, they are the following:

My Account

Checkout

Create an Account

I have obviously missed something. Can anyone help me to correct these link errors.

The site is www.truebugvintage.com/shop

Thanks

Either disable SSL in the /includes/shop/configure.php file or configure it to use shared SSL (if available)

If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you.

Thanks that's really helpful. I have decided to install SSL using a trusted cert from GoDaddy. Just the cheaper one where I don't have the company name on the cert. It's fine for this particular project at the moment. Does this mean I would have shared SSL or not? Could you explain the difference between shared SSL and normal SSL?

Shared SSL

With shared SSL you get the benefits of SSL with out the costs that are usually associated with setting up a SSL server. with Shared SSL you use your web hosting company's SSL certificate. With shared SSL you usually get a secure url like https://secure.yourhost.tld/~username

Private SSL

With private SSL you must purchase your own SSL certificate and have a dedicated IP to run the SSL server on. With private SSL you get a secure URL lke https://secure.yourname.com/ and your web hosting companies name is not included in the url with private ssl. Private SSL is more costly because private SSL requires you to purchase an SSL certificate and have a dedicated IP

Thanks for the speedy reply, that helps.

Can I clarify that if I use a shared SSL for the time being, do I need the GoDaddy cert at all?

And to get the shared SSL do I need to contact my hosting provider to set this up with them or will it be there already? I can see in my panel with them there are options to upgrade to get a dedicated IP and to get Private SSL certs. There is nothing mentioned about shared SSL's

Sorry my knowledge on this is rubbish, it's all rather new.

Thanks again so much for your help.

I've always purchased a dedicated IP and SSL from the host I'm working with. They install it and all that jazz, there isn't anything to do but pay them. Anywhere from $50-$100 py for dedicated IP and $20-$50 for the SSL just depends on the host I'm dealing with.

If you plan on taking credit cards through a merchant gateway I'm pretty certain they are going to require you to have a private ssl which means you'll need the dedicated ip. PayPal / Moneybookers I don't know. Haven't used them in many years.

P.S My hosting provider has a SSL/TSL manager area which lead me down this SSL cert road. I have created a Private Key and a cert signing request in this area and when I came to the CRT part this is where I came across the whole self cert, trusted cert issue.

Thanks NodsDorf. I'm pretty sure with the Paypal account I'm using they said I don't require it. But I'll double check with them. Should this indeed be the case, would I in your opinion, be alright with a shared SSL for member account creating?

Or would I really need one for this at all? The account would store the shoppers name address etc like in any basic normal online shop.

If you purchased one from GoDaddy, then it should be sufficient.

Again, I never not gone full bore with both ssl and dedicated ip, so I'm not sure the options there.
