error in admin categories

i have this error. i always back up my files to my pc as an extra back up for when all else fails. i could not edit my products or categorie folders and i think i know why.

the reason is that i got this error code

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '}' in /home/zlunfcsz/public_html/www.chrysalis-beauty.co.uk/shopping/admin/categories.php on line 418

i did what it said and then got another error

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in /home/zlunfcsz/public_html/www.chrysalis-beauty.co.uk/shopping/admin/categories.php on line 838

so i followed this and then i could not edit anything in the categories / products section of admin.

so my conclusion is that i should not be following the error message and get to the root cause.

just one more thing to add. the back up i had on my pc has now been restored. this back up was done when all was well but i am still getting the same errors.

help is definately needed on this one.

thanks

graham

get the said file from the original downloaded oscommerce archive to replace the one you have been getting error, to see if the error goes away. you did not mention what version was that, and had it been modified.

thanks for that. it has sorted the problem. sorry for not informing you that it is v2.3.1 and that i have many add-ons. the only add-on i have in categories.php is Header Tags SEO. would another add-on affect this from another file.

i have done what you said and it worked. i tried re-inputting header tags seo but the same error came up refering to line 839. so there must be something wrong with another file that is linked to header tags seo. could you offer any suggestions. thats if you have used it before. dont really know how popular it is.

sorry but i dont use the add-on you mentioned. i have my own header tag add-on which doesnt modified the file in question, and it allows you to enter or edit meta tags in a batch (so its much quicker), unlike some others you have to enter and edit meta tags per product.

if you think you would stick to the add-on you have been having problem with, then you should post your question to that support forum/thread.

It is very easy to make a mistake applying the code changes for Header Tags SEO to admin\categories.php, as that file requires many code edits for the addon.

Many people use that addon, and I believe it has been updated for V2.3x, so you should perhaps just recheck your edits.

one may argue that no pain no gain. but as far as i am concerned, spend a lot of time and effort on meta tags is a bit extraordinary, given the fact that seo or getting your site searchable is not just about meta tags, its more about, eg, what you are selling.

thanks for all the advise. i plan on removing header tags seo but itll take around 2 hours(took me that long to install). does any one have any suggestions on what is the best(add-on friendly) i know that this should be but everything has been working perfectly since i first installed it and then i put another addon in and it dosnt like it. dont really know why it has done it as it even occured when i restored the backup. could it be due to an update to oscommerse. i dont really know what version i started on but im on 2.3.1 now. could i have started on v2.3 and i need to apply an update to header tags seo or am i blowing into the wind.

You can try posting your categories.php file here if you like, maybe someone here will make the edits for you.
