Quick Search String Passes to Advanced

I have looked through the forums and haven't found this solution, so hopefully somebody here will know of a quick patch or two that will accomplish either or both of the following goals:

 

1. It would be helpful if when the customer types a search string into the quick find box, and then clicks advanced search instead of the magnifier icon, for that string to be passed on to the advanced search input field. Right now, it presents the customer with a blank input box where they have to retype their search string again - very counter to expectations and convenience.

 

2. If nothing shows up on quick find, instead of just showing the barely helpful "There is no product that matches the search criteria" it would be more useful to present that message with the advanced search form beneath it and the suggestion that they try a different search.
