Gary Tayman
Hi, I'm your newest OSCommerce user. I've been running an online store through Sams Club for years, and found out it's going away. So I've attempted to set up using a few other ecommerce programs, and never got past square one. So here I am, trying OSCommerce. So far I like the layout; it appears straightforward and easy to use. I suppose I'll find out as I continue. However, my first question, remembering I'm a business and not necessarily a banker or computer geek: I noticed on the "Features" that OSCommerce offers payment from credit cards offline; I take this to mean that I can get the customer's number and run it manually through my machine. This is what I want, at least for now. The question is, exactly what do I select in the Payments Module? Default shows Paypal is accepted, and it appears this is already set up properly or me. If so, wonderful! But how do I set up to accept Visa, Mastercard, and Discover so I can process them manually? Any and all help is appreciated; thanks! Also, I see a book is available. Any comments? I've had bad experiences before, where the book tells you very little and it's instructions are five versions ago. If this book contains accurate, understandable information about using OSCommerce, I'll happily buy it.
Guest
Gary, osCommerce does NOT come with a credit card module for a reason. In most of North America, it is now illegal to obtain credit card information for offline processing because of PCI DSS compliance requirements. If you check with a compliance organization in your state/province you will find this process can be VERY expensive (6000-10000). With that in mind, most online store owners find it more economical to use online processing companies like PayPal, Authorize.net and Sagepay. Keep in mind, your website should still utilize an SSL for added security even will using those payment processors. Chris

What bothers me with this is the fact that, as part of my business, I offer repairs and conversions of vintage car radios. This is something that's going to be outside the realm of ecommerce, but customers want a way to send me their credit card information securely, rather than on the phone or via regular e-mail. A lot of MOTO commerce still takes place! On the "old" system I have a means whereby customers send me the credit information via secure e-mail. If this goes away, the result will be LESS security, not more. Plus, with Paypal it takes me twice the time to get the money. I'll be giving my bank a call to see what they recommend. Meanwhile I've looked through the rest of OSCommerce, and though I still have questions in a few places, overall it's the best and easiest I've seen. As soon as it's "possible" to use, I'll go with it.

Actually I think I have my answer. I had a chat with my merchant representative, and she can set me up with a gateway through Sage, which this software supports. So I'm past the first big roadblock. Paypal -- looks like it's setup ALREADY. I've already set up much of the rest of the store. Now it's time to start entering categories and products. Further questions I'll let you know -- thanks for your help.
