Shopping Cart Line Item Totals Incorrect

I recently inherited the administration of an osCommerce v2.2 store. At some point, the previous administrator (who left no documentation or notes) changed the settings in such a way that has resulted in incorrect shopping cart line item quantities.

Problem: From any product item screen, if I add an item (quantity 1, e.g., price $7.95) to the cart, when the cart is displayed, I have a *default* line item total of $31.80 for a quantity of 4. The overall *cart* total reflects that I've only added one item for a total of $7.95, but the line item total is wrong. I can adjust the quantity back down to 1, but that doesn't change the fact that the default is incorrect. (This is very disconcerting to customers - the total is right, but the line item total is four times what they've ordered. No one wants to spend money when the software looks like it's broken.)

Here's what I've tried to fix it:

While logged in as admin, when I look at the Dashboard > Configuration > Maximum Values, the "Product Quantities In Shopping Cart" is currently set to "4". If I change that to "0", which is *supposed* to represent "no limit" to the number of products that people can use, and save the settings, my item quantities for each item disappear and there's no option to add *anything* to the cart. Furthermore, if I click "add to cart", then go to the shopping cart, I can't change the quantities there either.

If I change the Maximum Values "Product Quantities In Shopping Cart" to any number besides zero, *that's* the number of items that I can add to the cart (though the default for each item is 1), and that's also the number of items that shows up in the line item total.

Any suggestions for how to fix this? It looks to me that something has been modified in multiple places - not just the Maximum Values screen - but I can't find where else such modifications might have occurred.

Please note that (a) I cannot upgrade osCommerce at this time and (B) I'm using v2.2 and cannot add any patches.
