How to upload and update my OSC 2.2 site

Hey All,

I need some help, I have been away from OSC for about 6 years now. So I have forgotten ALOT of what I once knew. And ALOT has changed in that time as well. Here is my mission. I have a version 2.2 OSC website that I built from scratch, that is highly customized with ALOT of mods. The website was active back in 2005 and was fully functional before I had to mothball it. All the files and the SQL Database are on my PC. I want to resurrect this site and get it back up and working.

I need help with the following:

1. I want to upgrade to the newest version 2.3.1 I believe it is. This is already installed on my host server.

2. I need to upload my SQL database into the 2.3.1 site

3. I need to upload the 2.2 site itself into the 2.3.1 site

4. I need to secure the website

So first things first. Can I do it?

Second, if so, how do I do it? Step by step guidence would be appreciated.

Thanks

keith,

2) Your MS2.2 database is not compatible with the newer v2.3.1 database so you will need to modify the old database to make it compatible.

3) You don't upload the old site into a new v2.3.1 site. You just import the database and transfer the /images folder to your new installation.

4) v2.3.1 does not require any core code updates to secure it, however I do suggest installing the '5 must have' contributions to help monitor the site and keep out unwanted traffic.

Chris,

First, thanks for the fast reply.

2) Your MS2.2 database is not compatible with the newer v2.3.1 database so you will need to modify the old database to make it compatible.

As I said i'm a bit out of practice with all the OSC stuff. So Can you tell me how to modify the database to make it compatible with the 2.3.1 version?

3) You don't upload the old site into a new v2.3.1 site. You just import the database and transfer the /images folder to your new installation.

Do I upload the modified database into the existing database created during the 2.3.1 OSC install? or do I import to a new database I created in mysql? Transfering the /images folder is something I think I can handle. I just replace the existing folder in the new OSC with mine from my website, correct?

4) v2.3.1 does not require any core code updates to secure it, however I do suggest installing the '5 must have' contributions to help monitor the site and keep out unwanted traffic.

I had a center site contrib along with many others. Will I need to reinstall any of the contribs I had on my old site in addition to the 5 must haves?

Thanks Again,

Keith

Keith,

Download and read the update instructions included with v2.3.1 for more information about database changes required.

You would only upload the product images into the new /images directory. Don't copy your existing /images folder completely.

You would not be able to include your current contributions (add ons) from MS2.2 to v2.3.1. You will need to either update them and then load them into the new site, or use newer versions available from the add on area designed for v2.3.1
