Whats best for the product SEO

I am going to hate starting another SEO thread. This is possibly a silly question.

What is better for SEO Having one product with say 10 options, or listing all 10 items seperately. Or doesnt it make a difference.

I await the answer with baited breath

I've just started playing with attributes as well but I find it so much quicker to put in (in my case 18) separate items than one item with 18 options...

My store is currently running Phoenix 1.0.3.0

I'm currently working on 1.0.7.2 and hope to get it live before 1.0.8.0 arrives (maybe 🙄 )

I used to have a list of add-ons here but I've found that with the ones that supporters of Phoenix get any other add-ons are not really neccessary

It depends on the product, the competition for its keyword and the options. Generally speaking, if you sell a product that comes with option A or option B and people are searching for that product with the option in the search (use googles keyword tool to find that out), then you would want to have two products listed. But if they are just searching for the product (without the option), then you would just have one product with attributes. However, if you can list the product as two products and make them different enough so they are not seen as duplicate products, then that would provide more exposure in the listings since they would both be listed separately. In that case, you would target each to some variation of the keyword being searched for.

Colour is the only difference with the products that i sell, or size. I just dont like the way that oscomerce handle options. It takes so long to add them. Every option has a seperate quantity, so that needs to be added as well. As i am playing with 2.3.1 for a new site, it may pay to go down the attributes line, and see how that goes. Thanks Jack

Easy Populate handles attributes well and speeds up the process, as long as there are not a lot of them. But I think if you made two products and everything was the same excpet the color, you would almost definately run into duplicate content issues.

I think my store might fall into this category - I have one product (actually I have more ;) ), one colour but many sizes and many applications.

The search engine I chose to optimise for was the human one - I know that my customers will search for the application, possibly the size as well before my product so that is the way I want it found - even though SEO would seem to advise listing the product and having the sizes and application as attributes

My store sells electrical wire. Its available in 3 sizes and 11 colours plus complete rolls on the reel. Listed as it is now thats 44 items. I did originally add the reels seperate, and the sizes seperate with the colours as options. But customers being customers kept complaining they got the wrong colours. (they were not going down the page and clicking an option) I decided to list them all seperate, but was reading somewhere about duplicate descriptions, which is why i thought i would ask.

With the colours as options, stock control became complicated as options dont seem to deduct from the right place. As i am thinking of updating my store to 2.3.1 i will leave things as they are, but think of something different later.

Hi

I sell electrical cable and other electrical items such as fuses where the only difference is the amperage. I read an SEO site and it says to make the descriptions different, something like customer reviews adds unique text to the description. Adding a bit of text to the descriptions will also make them unique.I know it is probably alot of work but if you can index 44 products as opposed to 1 then surely it is worth the effort

Ok. So i have listed 7/0.2 layout wire. The only difference is the colour. The cable description is the same, apart from the mention of the colour. People do not search for 'pink layout wire', they look for 'layout wire'. Is there an advantage to having 11 products, using the main keyword and key phrase, rather than the one, but with almost repetitive descriptions and header tags.

I will get to grips with this eventually.

The more pages you can have listed, the better your chances of being found. But the search engines won't allow you to do that. That is the whole concept behind duplicate content. Otherwise, I could create a script that creates a million pages all with the same keywords and text. It could ruin the whole system. Google once stated that they can't define what duplicate content is but they would know it when they see it. Most people that study such things agree that about a 15% difference in the pages is enough to not cause them to be duplicate pages. So for just a color change, that would be a lot of work for you to come up with different text for each color and that would make it not worth it.

That is what i thought. Options it will be on the new site i think.

I have just done a test for this. I have a product nitd fuses. Now, if I search for NITD16 which is 16 Amp, The first search results are all from sites that list them all individually (with mine at 5 which shocked me [no pun intended lol]). If I search for just NITD then a different set of results appear with one of the sites from the previous search appearing near the top (I will be adding a page to compete here as it appears that I dont have one)
