Supplying data to osCommerce from MS SQL Server

Hello.

We are in the process of evaluating various tools to allow us to provide an online ordering system.

Nothing too fancy at this stage, just a way of allowing our customers a way to order from our stock list.

We are looking at osCommerce.

All orders would be manually verified and re-entered into our in-house accounting systems (credit limits/checking, stock levels, pricing/discounts, etc.).

To this end, there are several features we are looking for, either as part of the application or that can be added on or can be easily developed.

  • Import of customers, delivery address locations, products and customer specific pricing.

The buying of our products is only one part of our relationship with the customer. We provide other services to them, either directly or indirectly, and all of the setup for these services will take time. As such a new customer will not arrive via the online ordering system.

We would like to be able to take our existing customer, delivery addresses, products and pricing data and import it directly into the application.

Certain fields within osCommerce would not be appropriate for our use (gender and DOB for example).

  • Export of orders requests

Once a customer has entered an order, we would like to pass that information through to our ordering staff. This could be as simple as an email, though a PDF would be better as that can be logged in our document tracking system. Also, a PDF is harder to alter than an email.

Our databases are all Microsoft SQL Servers (2000, 2005 and 2008).

Other than these 2 features, we would like to have control over the design of the site to match our other sites.

We am willing and able to develop these features if the implementation is relatively simple.

A few other features ...

  • Being able to block the registration of a new customer or at least a message saying how to contact us for new customers.
  • Being able to provide a default password when the customer is initially imported and allowing (or forcing) them to change it.
  • Removal of unrequired (at least by us) data (gender, DOB, etc.)
  • No payments at this stage. They are not buying products. They are ordering them. Invoicing will be done monthly from our accounting systems.

Is osCommerce capable of being amended to fit our requirement?

I think the main features are to be able to import and export the data in an easy way and to support customer specific pricing.

Regards,

Richard Quadling.

Hi Richard,

If your current database can be exported into CSV format, then you can use Easy Populate to Import it into the osCommerce Database. Customer Specific Price can be used to assign special pricing and PDF Invoice can be added for a more professional looking invoice. Also, you can use Admin Create Account to assign new clients a temporary password, which they can then change the password upon first log in.

As for the rest of your requirements, I am sure most everything can be edited to work as you would like.

Chris
