that is not true. I have only been looking around for about a week or so.... but I have seen plenty of different shops....

It all depends on how well you know (or are willing to learn) PHP and HTML etc

I agree - it is extremely customizable (based on your knowledge of php and mysql)

click on the showcases link and look at all the different style stores out there - it just takes time and patience (or a friend that is really good with php :)

In fact, you don't even need to know much PHP. If you are good with HTML you can do a lot of customizing. As far as PHP, there is a lot, I mean a lot of pre-written code on this site. If you can follow directions, cut and paste. Youv'e got it.

it would definately take some work but you could do it...

there is a contribution for placing navigation tabs, but it needs some work

creating the popup images for the tabs would take a little time, but should be difficult as its just a roll-over style thing

there are various contributions for the product page layouts

seems like most of the stuff they have there is already included in OSC, its just implemented differently, but that doesnt mean you can't move stuff around on the page, remove the left or right column, condense info, etc..

Usually the provider (oscommerce) of the source code doesn't give away the full

source.

is this true? i asked a web designer to customize a ringtone website example www.matrixm.com.

this is what he wrote to me:

We definitely have an expertise in

PHP programming, but specifics of the open source

http://www.oscommerce.com/osCommerce22ms1/ is that is basically standart

shopping chart. It is customizable, but just up to the certain point

such as shopping chart categories and visual design of pages.

Working with working source has its specifics:

1. Research of the existing code could take as much time as writing a

new code specific for your business needs.

2. Usually the provider of the source code doesn't give away the full

source.

Also just to mention that the open source you mentioned doesn't cover

any specific features as midi file convert into a polyphonic ring tone,

picture change to fit onto a cell phone.

your future ringtone site has to interact with mobile operators, treat

media and graphic files and store copyrighted and private customer

information, we would still recommend to develop a secure and tested

personalized code foryour future project.

well if they do not give away the full source code than they are not in compliance with the GPL which governs open source projects.

people here give away all the source they write, and people make mods upon mods of contributions from other people - thats the beauty of open source - everyone reinvents the wheel to suit their particular requirements and needs.

sure, developing new code takes some time, but its all a factor of complexity - some stuff is obviously simple, other things are more complex and require more time, so all things being relative, there really are no boundaries.......

I agree you can go a long way without PHP knowledge and working with the code helps you to develop it. a software house that wants to rewrite rather than research might have its own vested interests at heart? Its easier to bill for new code than it is to research existing?

I have seen shops with major changes from the standard osCommerce but I think the standard design is pretty good and I will be sticking to that (with Loaded 5 and other contributions)

I look to ebay and Amazon for my design guidance. Simple layout, white background same as osCommerce
