Set the permissions level to 444 either via your FTP program on through your host's cPanel-->file manager tool. While your at it check the configure.php settings on the admin side as well. I am not a professional webmaster or PHP coder by background or training but I will try to help as best I can. I remember what it was like when I first started with osC. It can be overwhelming. However, I strongly recommend considering hiring a professional for extensive site modifications, site cleaning, etc. There are several good pros here on osCommerce. Look around, you'll figure out who they are.

If that's a local install on your PC use Windowz explorer and make the file "read only". If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. I then google the problem and I found out that FileZilla doesnt support permission update. You can only change the permission using windows explorer. And that was what I did, I denied 'write' access on the configure.php file from all. Cheers!
MrPhil Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 This is on a Windows server, so "444" permissions are meaningless. FileZilla can, AFAIK, only deal with permission changes on Linux servers. Even at that, most servers are now configured to ignore chmod requests from browsers or FTP clients. On a Windows server, you need to go onto the server and use its administrative interface to add the "read only" attribute to the files in question.
