My designer is trying to build some SEO features into my site; but the SEO module he found conflicts with the drop down menu that I asked him to build into the site.

 

Is it possible to get 1st page ranking without paying someone thousands a month?

It is possible to get 1st page ranking without paying anyone. The easiest way is to get a lot of people linking to your site and visiting it often. It can be done if you provide content people can't resist.

 

But it's very unlikely. Few websites pull it off. SEO makes it much more likely to get a higher ranking.

Yes, it is certainly possible to index well. It doesn't make any difference what type of package one uses for a shop, just how the code is setup for the search engines. Your designer, if he is not fluent is oscommerce, is almost certainly going about it all wrong. I've seen this happen many times. Have a look at the link in my signature for the SEO addons I recommend. Once those are installed, the site can be setup to target your keywords and the majority of SEO work be completed.

It will give you a basic understanding of the fundamentals of SEO and the tools you can use to improve your website's SEO. You will be able to apply SEO not only to your current webpage, but also to other side projects that could benefit from SEO. Building your page ranks can be done without paying thousands of dollars and once you master SEO, you could see improved page rankings fairly quickly.
