rusty1001 Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Hi It seems that googlestore.com use osc, as I see it? I think that is a good call for osc. Is this true? Funny thing is that it seems that google have not installed a seo module ? /index.php?=8271183 not clean product links? No seo meta tages, no individual product titles? I guess that is what they want ? Cheers Rusty -------------------------------------------
Guest Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Rusty, I checked that link, and it is written in .asp so it can not be oscommerce. Chris

Chris Thanks HUH? href="http://www.google-store.com/index.php?cPath=24">Accessories</a><ul class="item_list"><li><a href="product_info.php?products_id=247">Google Bean Bag</a></li><li><a href="product_info.php?products_id=373 advanced_search_result.php ? Guest Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Rusty, There is some unique coding there for sure http://www.googlestore.com/shop.axd/Contact and, the stores in Canada, USA and Africa are different from those on the rest of the map. I am still fairly certain they are not OSC based. Chris
rusty1001 Posted October 16, 2010 Author Posted October 16, 2010 Now that is an interesting topic, US stores .asp and other php ? Why? Could this be that they are supporting both formats or another reason? cheers Rusty -------------------------------------------
MrPhil Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Well, the European store, at least, has identical URLs to osC. I don't know why they would implement an ASP solution in the US, and PHP (osC?) elsewhere... it doesn't make sense. The footer says it's powered by Merchandise Mania, but gives no osC copyright. It's very possible that someone was inspired by osC, or started with it as a template, but the lack of SEO is odd (that's something you'd think a Google site would shine in!). If it is actually powered by osC, are they violating the license by omitting the copyright? At the least, it's rude of them to steal osC (if that's what they did). I suppose that if you took standard osC and brought it up to date with necessary patches and enhancements/add-ons, it could be a fairly decent store even for someone leading edge like Google. Maybe Merchandise Mania (brandmerchandise.com) is contracted by Google to actually build and run the store(s), which is why the lack of SEO?

I think the lack of seo is that fact that the products are just for employees (but not exclusive) and they dont want to be found..essentially.. it is not a money making opportunity? Brandmaerchandise dont do websites, so not sure how they can say powered by ..should be mananged by.. cheers Rusty -------------------------------------------
MrPhil Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 I think the lack of seo is that fact that the products are just for employees (but not exclusive) and they dont want to be found..essentially.. it is not a money making opportunity? That would certainly be a dumb thing to do! If you want your store for employees only, you put it on your intranet, not out on the Web. Why wouldn't they want to sell to the general public -- anything with the "Google" name on is advertising for Google, and people pay them to do advertising! It's better than free advertising! So, it's not that they don't want to be found. Why operate a store unless you want to make money? I just think this "Merchandise Mania" bunch aren't very competent at running a website. Maybe they can come up with good products, but their Web skills leave a little to be desired. Ironic for sites bearing the Google name, isn't it? Maybe they started out with an osC-based store and are converting over to a custom ASP store, one region at a time, and they didn't bother to do SEO on the osC because it was a throwaway starter store? Who knows!
