Guest
Your best bet is to do this by hand. Go to the big dogs (Google, Yahoo, ALtavista, DogPile) etc...and submit your site. Make sure that your site is ready without any "Under Construction" messages. It may take awhile, but you will start seeing results. AltaVista used to have a $36.00 per 6 months package that would allow them to index your site every month. I am not sure what is happening to this while Overture is buying them out. You can also check with inkomi and pay a small fee for indexing.
Denver Dave
My vote is to do a couple of link trades and manual submissions. If you have good content, you will do fine, but it does take a while.

HyperJack
You don't need a program. In fact auto submixxion programs get get you into some trouble with certain engines. Try http://webmasterworld.com for a wealth of info on this subject.
radders
Use Google's Adwords )and make the criteria very specific) until you get high enough placings from your content.
mazza
Easy, Keep SEO in mind when building site. Note that the current headers in pages are just formatted text. (just for appearance). Google does not give any extra weigth for it. But if you make it <h1>, it does. Titles. By default there is just one title that is used on every page. Get the "Lets see what we have here..." contribution to get Intelligent titles. SID must die.
