Problem accessing my site

Ok I am a newbie at this stuff so take it easy on me. I signed up for hosting with web easy and I attempting to build a site with OSC. This option was available in the control panel, so that's where I started at, so there was no installing anything. OSC version is 2.2-MS2 according to the server information. My first problem comes when I type my address in www.dreamchasergifts.com it does not take me to my page, it takes me to a log-in for the control panel. When I go to the server the root has the following folders:

dreamchasergifts.com

dreamchasergifts.webeasysite.us

logs

stats

I'm guessing that something is not in the root as it should be or a code is missing somewhere to point it in the right direction. So should I use the ASC version supplied from my host or should I install a different version?

Next question is, is the shared ssl provided by the host provide adequate security for a web site or should I buy one. I have attempted to use the provided but am having difficulties getting it configured. More questions will come on that when I get back to it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Rodney

And therein lies the problem. Your host is providing you with an outdated version. You need to clear out your files and start by downloading the latest version from this website.

You're going to have to ask your hosting service what's going on. It sounds like something is out of whack with your server configuration -- both http://dreamchasergifts.com and http://www.dreamchasergifts.com should get you into your site. Presumably your site itself is under either /dreamchasergifts.com or /dreamchasergifts.webeasysite.us directory (folder) -- your host can tell you. Was osC installed under either one of those? Normally it's installed under /catalog or even just /.

osC 2.2 MS2 is ancient. You should be at osC 2.2 RC2a, which is much more up to date. Shame on your host for foisting something so out of date on you. I would suggest uninstalling the MS2 and, if your host won't get an updated version, getting the current osC installation package from this site and manually installing it. Do NOT, under any circumstances, try to use a WYSIWYG page editor (e.g., webeasysite?) on osC code -- you'll mangle it. Learn to use a real text editor (ViM and Notepad++ are both highly recommended) and a real FTP client (FileZilla is probably the most recommended). If your host gets in the way of all this, find another host.

Finally, plan on your initial installation, whether it's 2.2 MS2 or 2.2 RC2a, to be a "throwaway" trial run. Version 2.3 is supposed to be out Real Soon Now (hint, hint, guys!). If you get a real store up and running on 2.2 RC2a, there should be an upgrade path so that you don't have to rebuild the store from scratch. I doubt that there will be a direct upgrade from 2.2 MS2, except by upgrading to 2.2 RC2a first.

ok so I deleted the old version and uploaded OSC 2.2RC2a with ws-ftp. Now it won't call up the install program as specified in the install document - Upload the catalog folder which includes the admin folder to your document root

(public_html, www, htdocs) using FTP.

Using phpMyAdmin or another tool, create your database and user, and assign that user

to the database. Write down the name of the database, username, and password for this

database for the database installation procedure.

Open your web browser and go to http://yourserver/catalog/install/ and click on the

Install button. At this point it continues to give me this message "Error 404: File Not Found"

Is there something I am missing or not doing?

Thanks, Rodney

Where did you install the files into? The instructions are assuming they are in http://dreamchasergifts.com/catalog/'>http://dreamchasergifts.com/catalog/ (the root of the installation). Are they somewhere else? There should be under /catalog an /install directory, and within it, an index.php file. Since you're getting a 404, I would assume that the files are not there, rather than permissions being wrong.

I just called up http://dreamchasergifts.com and the auto Index shows it's completely empty. It looks like you didn't upload anything!

All files where uploaded to the root. I have tried it in the catalog folder and without the catalog folder(all files directly in the root). I have change permissions on the both the configure.php files as instructed, still nothing. Should i create a new sql database prior to uploading files or after, or does that matter at all and should I have deleted the database when I deleted the old version of OSC?

thanks, rodney

Now I get nothing but 404 errors on your site. You are going to have to discuss this with your host. The database is a little bit different between the two versions, so you should probably delete the old database and create a new one, to be sure you're up to date. It doesn't matter if it's done before or after uploading the new files.
