Upgrading PHP

Hi there

I have a question..., Sometime ago I installed OSCommerce Version 2.2 RC2a with my server PHP Version 4.4.9. I seem to remember at the time PHP 5.2 did not work well for this verion (I could be mistaken).

I have added some SEO modules to my site and I have issues with fopen/fclosed and have been advised to speak to my host. My host confirms that I need to upgrade to 5.2 to lose my errors.

With that said I am hesitent at this time until I hear it's okay to install the upgrade. Will I need to upgrade certain files in OSCommerce as well?

Please advise

Thanks

Andy

osC 2.2 RC2a should be fully compatible with PHP 5.2. It's known to have some problems with PHP 5.3, and will have to have a number of files edited to work (maybe by that time osC 2.3, which has these fixes in it, will be available?). If your SEO code requires PHP 5.2, go right ahead and upgrade PHP. Does your host offer any way to easily roll back PHP to 4 if something goes wrong with 5? A final note: if your upgrade comes with an upgrade to MySQL version 5, there are fixes that need to be made to prevent "1054" errors.

Now that is really confusing to me...

YOU don't upgrade php, your host does. Or, do you have a dedicated machine at your hosting company, or virtual server, or what? Or does your host have multiple versions of php installed an you can choose which one you want to use through a config file? And what OS are you referring to?

I have kept my linux machines up to date with all updates as they come out and have never had any problem with 2.2 RC2a
