♥altoid Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 I transferred my site from host A to host B. Host B still has my domain on their books, but I changed the nameservers to point to host A. Obviously even though host B has my domain, the site runs fine on host A. Should I have the domain transferred over to host A, seems it would simply management, but otherwise does it matter? Thanks I am not a professional webmaster or PHP coder by background or training but I will try to help as best I can. I remember what it was like when I first started with osC. It can be overwhelming. However, I strongly recommend considering hiring a professional for extensive site modifications, site cleaning, etc. There are several good pros here on osCommerce. Look around, you'll figure out who they are.
Jack_mcs Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 Ooh, a trick question. I like these. :) The answer is c - neiher. The domain name should always be held by you in your own account. I recommend namecheap.com but anyplace will do. The reason is that you don't know what will happen with the host holding the domain name. If it gets locked up by them (not renewed, they go out of business or they just want to be mean), your site will no longer work. Odds of that happening are probably slim but it has happened and is not that uncommon. I had a hunch it wouldn't be simple. Soooooo, couldn't namecheap.com go under as unlikely as it is, as host a or host b? And, to make the transfer I had to "unlock" the domain on host a, and get an auth code from them as well so host be could take over. How's the procedure work with namecheap.com? Who, by the way has good prices including an inexpensive ssl cert if I was looking for one. They have been in business for quite a while so it is unlikely, but nothing is guaranteed. The difference is that you are not hosting with them. Let's say that you were hosting with the company that holds your domain name and their policy was that they provide you with a free domain name as long as you host with them. This used to be common practice but not as much anymore. Then you decide to change hosts because you found a better deal, got in an argument with a tech or whatever. But you find that your host won't allow you to use the domain name since you are not hosting with them. It almost seems illegal that a host can do that but some do. Yours may not - many don't - but your next host may. If you control that part of it, it can't happen. There is so much more to running your own shops than folks would imagine until they get into it. Thanks again.
