I don't know how you are configuring your site, but you could use the manufactures pull down and rename it to colors as a filter. This is ofcourse, if you are not using the manufactures listing. If you are, you can install another by looking for it in the add on area.

Colours are generally attributes .. I think to achieve this you would add a Search by colour "box/widget" that only appears for certain categories. Upon the search of a particular colour the system could search the products of that category and the attributes of the products ( colour attributes ) .

 

Then there is the issue that attributes don't have images .. you would probably want the returned items to have a "colour specific" image so this would need to be coded into the admin products creation tool.
