Use Products Extra Fields as "tags" ?

I see LOTS and LOTS of people looking for a better ability to let people "filter" products and/or view products in a different manner than how they are categorized.. Its similar to how you would use tags on a wordpress installation.. People can view the categories, but the admin also adds descriptive tags to the posts so the viewers can get more specific with what they are looking for..

For instance, If i had a hiking backpack and I categorized it under "back packs" that would be typical for a luggage type store..

What if someone wanted to find ALL hiking gear that I sell??

Well, if i was able "tag" it as hiking, then they could click the hiking tag and see all products tagged as hiking..

So unless an addon already existis.. any thoughts on making the "extra fields" work for this??

Anyone have any thoughts on this?? i want to really start coming up iwht a filtering system. I know many people have requested it, and currently the only existing script that I can see costs over $100..

If anyone wants in on this, I would love to collaborate.. I think that using the products extra fields and then start in on the searching functions of that, we can create a pretty good filtering system for the product listing page.. Interested??? I am down for some little contribution work if others are..
