OK - I accept that the mods here don't want commercial requests (as they see them) so now I understand why my prior post was deleted. So I hope they allow this one which is not about that specific topic ...

So then - how does one go about finding an OSCommerec developer / fixer / type person when you can't ask for one in teh OSCom forums?

Thanks in advance one and any.

As people from time to time post asking for paid development services (or offer them), I don't see why TPTB don't add a new board to this forum: General Topics > Paid Services (Buy/Sell). Anything touching on Filthy Lucre could be exiled to there. It would still be reasonable to ban anything not directly pertaining to osC, in a positive way (e.g., no paid services to convert from osC to some other shopping cart).

The majority of the team has always been against that.

If they want to cut their own throat, fine. The whole idea of a shopping cart is to help people make money by selling real things for real money. This may involve paid services. To pretend that osC can be pure and unsullied by contact with real world money is to severely restrict its use and growth. If people are willing to spend some money to make their osC store better in some way, but can't find the services they seek, guess what? They'll go elsewhere, to a store with a support site more friendly to commercial transactions. I can see a point in not allowing monetary transactions to mix with everything else, but what's the harm in having its own place? You could even put a "Please donate" button on that page!

Exactly my point.

I'm a long term IT bo but I'm a hardware guru and specialise in network support.

I have neither the time nor the energy in my life to learn PHP - my 20yr old is but he's not confident enough to do this for us yet. So I come to the most logical place there is to ask foir support and indicate a willingness to pay - now whilst I'm happy the mods don't want it in the general support forums there should be a commercial section.

MrPhil, its a darn up hill battle and this will, AGAIN, be another thread that gets one single response with no further thought on the matter.. there are plenty of people who are "sold" on the idea of osc as an out of the cart box and then quickly realize that it si NOT how it works and if they want anything custom they need to learn php or hire someone.. Yep, they actually NEED to hire someone to get their store where they want it..

Oh, and guess what, there is no osc job board.. Maybe its time to make one.. oscfreelancers.com or something.. The thing is, there are plenty of people who actually do occasional freelance work, and there are people who need it.. why wouldn't the official support forum has a single topic that covers that. its as simple as that..

oscfreelancers.com or something

Lindsay,

Did you know that already exists? Your post made me curious. Check it out sometime.

well, the domain exists, but its just a hand full of members looking for work.. its not a "job board" or anything.. I figured the domain existed, its a good one.. But there is no forum / board where members of this community can go to and posts posts like these and for developers who are a member of this community to answer them.. Without the 'big brother' looking around and shutting them down instantly.

There did indeed used to be a board on this forum for paid services. It worked well, but then started to get abused.

Last December, when I met the team, I brought up the idea of commercialness. I can safely say that it will never happen at this board based on the nature of the talk. NOTE; not all of the core team members (past and present) are 100% against commercialism.

oscfreelancers.com is a site that has brought together ONLY the best developers, and as far as I recall to be able to join you need to show that you know your stuff, hence why there are no people on there who ask questions here, only people who provide(d) answers.

Well exactly.. that website isn't a place to request paid help for a specific problem but instead send a direct message to what is basicallly a small team of developers. There are so many little things people would like to hire developers to do that a forum would be a way to get everything under one roof..

And since when is adding a forum to let people ask for paid help commercializing the code?? Its simply adding another service to the forum that would let people find quality developers or just simple "fix it" guys..

I agree, and argued the case face to face. I lost ;)

I do have a scriptlance like script and a good domain name, but haven't gotten around to setting it up. Actually that's not strictly true, it is set up and ready, but hasn't been fully tested.

Anyway, I cannot see a single reason why allowing paid-for services would be detrimental to osCommerce or it's team. But I am in a minority.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use a forum type situation?? Script lance type thing is too much like a job farm.. I think forums would be the easiest to manage and more informal, which is what I think people need.. Just someone where to pick some brains, ask for paid work.. Maybe they ask for paid work but someone links them to a tutorial that tells them exactly how to do it themselves..
