Session variable loses its value - Is unregistering it the only way that can happen?

I have a variable that is registered using tep_session_register. It *should* be holding its value between pages, but it's not and I cannot figure out why because tep_session_unregister is not called until later. Is there anything else that can clear a session variable? Any direction is greatly appreciated.

If you have external pages (outside of the cart) and the customer clicks one of those links to the external page, then the customer loses the OSCID and the session fails.
