stevan1978 Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Hi there, I'm in need of some asistance. I recently was contacted for a job. My customer has the latest OsCommerce software and has login for the backend so we still can change data and stuff but.. The guy who built the site died this year and my customer has no FTP account settings or MYSQL server account settings. I'm trying to see what I can do for him. I have a backup of the site (from the backend) of the SQL database and imported it locally on my notebook via Xampp. Is there a way to see in the backend or in the SQL database to retrieve the FTP information and / or MYSQL data somehow. The only other alternative is that I have to rebuild the whole site but this is a mega job and my customer isn't going to pay for a site twice. So I must keep the costs down. Is there anyone who can help me? Thanks in advance, Cheers. Stevan van de Merkt Enigma Webdesign Joomla | OsCommerce | Magento

He needs to contact them and explain the situation to recover his account...unless of course the person who died was the person hosting him. Already having the SQL database is the heart of the site, and looking at the tables will show you what add-ons he had but no FTP info. Good luck. Barbara
MrPhil Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 When you say "login for the backend", do you mean the osC "admin" functions, or the hosting service control panel? If the osC admin, that's just a privileged account within osC. If the hosting service (e.g., cPanel, Plesk, LPCP, WHM,...) your client should be able to reset FTP and MySQL passwords (the MySQL user and password should be in the configure.php files anyway). At worst, the hosting service should be able to reset various access passwords, but they should require some documentation that your customer is who they claim to be (credit card number, etc.). If all dealings were through the late site builder, that could be a problem. Customers should never have a "single point of failure", such as one guy who is the sole contact with other parties such as a hosting service. That's asking for trouble if he drops dead (which happened here!).
stevan1978 Posted August 5, 2010 Author Posted August 5, 2010 Hi Barbara and MrPhil, Thanks for the feedback. The problem is that the guy who died did his own hosting too. I just phoned the provider who hosts the server and they gave me an e-mail adres to contact one of the relatives. I'll keep you posted on this. Let me remind you that I'm making plans that if I die my customers wouldn't be left without any data. How terrible this is it's food for thought. Life is short and enjoy it any way you can. Grtz, Steve
MrPhil Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Yes, it is of course tragic. However, it was also very poor business planning to have such critical business data in one person's head. A business always needs to be sure that records are written down where they have access (not requiring a court order, family permission, etc. to get to) should some critical person drop dead.
