Need to add a field to customer table

I need to add a separate field to the customer table and I am not sure how to go about doing this. Any Help would be appreciated. I know this may sound like a complete noob but I still don't know the steps. Sorry!

There are add-ons for new fields on the product table, (product extra field). I suspect a search will reveal one for the customer file.

 

Adding the field is easy, it is allowing either the customer to maintain it in the account set up and maintenance screens or the site admin to maintain it in the shop admin pages that is more difficult.

I have already searched. I have to add a field for customer in order to install discount code.

In that case the contribution installation instruction should include instruction to run some sql.
