dichrolady Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Hi there! I'm really new to all this and spend alot of time reading these forums absorbing lots of good info. I've been monitoring my "Who's Online" frequently as I've been working on the admin side and had noticed this 1 IP address showing up frequently the past 24 hours, so I had written down the number last night and finally today after watching it come on and off my site, searched for the origin, and found it was coming from Russia, some commercial network it looks like to be coming from. When that person(?) is on my site, I think I am able to click on their cart and it showed over $2700.00 of product in it (I wish) at least, I think that is how I interpret that function to work. It is in the upper right corner of the page when there is a customer on line and they have items in their cart. But.....for me unfortunately....no sales yet! So I suppose those carts get abandoned. I've only been live a short while, but am concerned about the security of my site, even though I have no sales yet. I've read about deleting my file manager, changing passwords, file names and such, but deleting the file manager, I think I need to find a list of backup precautions to follow before I do it, I'm not that computer saavy, but I have sure learned alot here since I got this site! If anyone has any idea about what to watch for with my "suspicious customer", I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
Guest Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Hi Linda, Lately, Russian bots have been scouring the internet to populate new search engines based in Russia. The bots are not suppose to start a session and add items to the cart, however it is possible. If you feel the 'visitor' is up to no good, you should ban the IP in the .htaccess file Chris
dichrolady Posted July 16, 2010 Author Posted July 16, 2010 Thank you Chris for replying so quickly! There is so much to keep on the look out for! Here I haven't even made a sale, I have no customer data and such and I still feel threatened. I will find the how to on the banning the IP. This forum is great....so much knowledge here! I'm like a sponge! :P
Guest Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Hi Linda, It is better to be watchful of your site than to assume it is completely safe. More than likely, the Russian visitor is harmless but....lets face it, is that visitor likely to purchase 2700 in products and have you ship it there ? Probably not, so better safe than sorry. Chris

dichrolady Posted July 17, 2010 Author Posted July 17, 2010 oops! :o Sorry about that! I hit the button before I replied! Chris.....I was all over looking how to ban that IP address on the htaccess file....gosh, I found the file, but how do I edit it? I read all kind of posts about banning multiple IPs and such, and long lines of code? Or is there some location that enables me to do that without requiring me to know some type of code? I just don't want to enter something into the wrong file. I'm still just getting use to opening files, let alone know which ones I can and I'm a little gun shy now, didn't realize while searching my files and doing some editing, I must have deleted a line or more and made my header disappear! No problem huh? Well......I didn't design all that stuff and I had no idea how to fix it! My touch pad on my laptop drives me crazy...it is so sensitive....my cursor ends up in places it should't be! But anyway got it fixed, thanks to a great tech support guy from my webhost! If you could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Linda :)
