Error when trying to upgrade from older version of OSC

I have a very old installation of OSC done in 2005, version 2.2 MS2, installed through fantastico in cpanel. I've just been hacked and been told by hostgator that my version badly needs updating for a variety of issues, including the hackers have done damage to some files and they advise I need to reinstall or upgrade in order to get the site working again (categories will not load and other errors in admin). When I go into fantastico and try to upgrade to 2.2 rc2a I get the following error:

Initializing Parameters - Done.

Warning: require(includes/languages//attribute_sorter_copier.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/xxxx/public_html/admin/includes/languages/english.php on line 306

Warning: require(includes/languages//attribute_sorter_copier.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/xxxx/public_html/admin/includes/languages/english.php on line 306

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'includes/languages//attribute_sorter_copier.php' (include_path='/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/lib/php/:.') in /home/xxxs/public_html/admin/includes/languages/english.php on line 306

I removed any references to attribute sorter copier in english.php but I installed this contribution years ago and no longer have the download package and any idea where the files are. And is it the contribution that's causing the problem? Is there another way to upgrade without going through fantastico or will I still get the same errors?

Also is there any chance of losing changes made to the site when I upgrade, i.e. contributions, stylesheet, database etc? Any help would be much appreciated!!

Brenda,

You can't use Fantastico to upgrade your OSC site. You have to download the current version and read the upgrade instructions. Be prepared for a LONG drawn out process.

In my personal experience, it is less time consuming to create a new site than it is to upgrade one.
