How to handle concurrent update of quantity

Hi friends,

I have problem with concurrent update of quantity. Consider that there is only 1 item available for a particular product. It is added to the cart by two customers simultaneously. After authorization from the payment gateway both are allowed to purchase the item without any out of stock warning and the quantity goes to -1. Any help on how to handle this.
