Adding a second variable similar to manufacturers to your product display?

Hello,

 

I have searched and searched and cannot find, for the life of me, how to add a separate variable that would be displayed on the list of products in a category. I want to be able to have a variable similar to manufacturers that will be displayed during the product listing.

 

I know that there would have to be some added information to the database, but cannot find any sort of a guide on how to do this, although I know it has been done. If you know, please help.
