Problem Saving Changed .php files

I am unable to change any of my .php files. I have had my site for a while and decided that I needed to change what was on the index page. I went through and found the index.php, opened it, wrote it what I wanted it to say, and tried to save it and all that happens is that the page is re-directed to a blank page, does not return back to my file manager, and does not save the changes. If I press press back I can get back to the editing screen and press cancel and it goes back to the file manager. I have tried to edit several pages (making sure it wasn't a problem only with index.php) and was unable to edit anything in the php files. Oddly enough, I am still able to make changes in the catalog.

Someone please help me, I normally can find something in the discussion boards but was unable to this time and my main selling season is around the corner! Thanks for anyone who can help.

Stacy,

First problem. NEVER US FILE MANAGER, IN FACT IT SHOULD BE DELETED. Second use a text editor to make changes to your files. Never use Word or Frontpage to edit PHP files because they leave unwanted code in the file.

Depending on what it is you want to change, you will need to edit the text directly in the file, or in the language file.

I don't actually know how to do anything in this program without file manager. I am trying to fix it in the language file english/index.php but it will not save my changes. It just re-routes me to a blank screen and does not save the changes. I am not great at working OSCommerce but I have been able to get it to work so far so quite a while, I just need to be able to update the information on my pages!

Thanks for the response!

Stacy, there are plenty of free FTP programs out there. You can edit the file in a plain text editor like Notepad. Make sure you make a backup copy of the file before changing it, and also make sure you upload the modified php file in ASCII mode (and also make sure you upload it to the correct folder).
